From Brawn to Brain On the evolution of Guide & Control systems By the druid Finn 1. The brawn phase: control through force (Big Brother) The
earliest large-scale Guide & Control systems operate through direct
physical (hence
boundary) constraint. Their
defining characteristics: ·
visibility: armies, police, walls, chains ·
cost: every act of control requires bodies,
weapons, logistics ·
latency: slow response, slow feedback ·
failure mode: revolt This is Big Brother architecture. Big Bother overpowers! It works
only while the cost of coercion is lower than the cost of resistance. 2. The bureaucratic phase: control through paperwork Force is
gradually replaced by process: ·
censuses ·
taxation records ·
identity documents ·
legal codes ·
permits, forms, registries Here
control (and
guidance) is no
longer muscular; it is administrative. Obedience
is achieved by friction rather than fear. This is
the transition layer between brawn and brain. 3. The media phase: control through narrative Once
populations (i.e. a
field of tokens) can be reached simultaneously, guide systems
evolve again: ·
newspapers ·
radio ·
cinema ·
television ·
mass schooling Now
compliance is shaped upstream of action. This is
still recognisably Big
Brother — but
with softer hands. 4. The digital phase: control through prediction With
electronic, later quantum networks, the guide system stops reacting and
starts anticipating. ·
clicks are logged ·
habits are profiled ·
preferences are inferred ·
futures are simulated ·
trivial pursuit games, like Reddit, scrape raw
user data The
system no longer waits for disobedience. It
redesigns the environment so that disobedience is improbable. This is
the first true brain-based control layer. 5. The cognitive phase: control through assistance Here the
decisive inversion occurs. The
system does not say: “Do
this.” It says: “I’ve
already done it for you.” Navigation
apps remove the need to orient. Effort
itself is engineered out. This is Big Sister (i.e. field digestion) architecture. Big Sister disempowers! 6. The dependency attractor A (conscious) brawn system dominates
(tyrannizes) by
threat. The
metric is no longer obedience. The more
tasks are offloaded, Control
no longer needs enforcement. It, Big Sister, (Mum or Ma to some) arrives
as helpfulness saturation. 7. Final compression The historical
arc is not from tyranny to freedom. It is
from: Force
that confronts the body From brawn to brain. And the
endpoint is not the prison. It is the
pram. (indeed, the unconsciously accepted slavery of the
wholly dependent). |
